05 Aug Janvi’s Eye: Revolutions Are Tradition
Yahney-Marie Sangaré both kicks off the Women in Agency Festival and inaugurates the Corner Nest Lab with her new play In Time.
Sitting in the higher rows of the Signature Center’s Linney Theatre, I felt like a fly on the wall in a storied Manhattan apartment, observing activists, poets, artists, and mysterious visitors. In Time asks its characters, and, in turn, us, what it means to bear witness to history, to maps, to borders, to conflict, and to each other.
How well do we know our neighbors? An intergenerational apartment building community forms and comes together in a home, showing us what older and younger generations can and do learn from each other: “Revolutions are tradition, huh?”
The characters itch to be a part of movements bigger than themselves whether in solidarity or because of circumstances they are born into and tasked with. They listen and respond to what troubles them, rather than quiet that voice: “It’s good to be troubled.”
In Time invigorates us to take action and leave the play energized to heed the call: “All power to the people.” Come see it for yourself and join us for the next iteration of In Time on August 16 at 7 PM.
